Alloy 317L Tubing
Alloy Metals and Tubes International stocks alloy 317L (UNS S31703) tubes for use in applications that require superior corrosion resistance to 304 and 316 tubes. Alloy 317L tubing is a more corrosion resistant austenitic relative of alloy 316L, due to the addition of another percent or so of molybdenum.
The additional moly gives alloy 317L tubing improved resistance to chlorides and other halides, particularly, and makes it a strong candidate for use in offshore applications or in processing applications such as pulp and paper processes that contain such corrosive environments. With it's improved chemistry, alloy 317L tubing provides higher creep, stress-to-rupture, and tensile strength at elevated temperatures than conventional stainless steel tubes.
Due to its low carbon content, alloy 317L tubing can be welded without risk of sensitization due to intergranular corrosion that can result from chromium carbide precipitation in the grain boundaries. This superior welding performance to alloy 316L often makes possible the use of a full range of conventional welding procedures (except oxyacetylene) with alloy 317L. An overalloyed filler metal is often recommended to maintain corrosion resistance.
Alloy 317L tubing can be hardened by cold working, not by heat treating. This tough alloy is subject to work hardening during machining, and care should be taken to be sure to use the proper tooling at the appropriate, slow speed for best results.
Alloy Metals and Tubes International has a good stock of 317L tubing in inventory in Houston, and we want to meet your needs for stainless instrumentation tubing and high nickel alloy instrumentation tubing of all sizes and alloys.
